STAY SAFE ALL SUMMER LONG

Summer Safety Tips from the Southern Crew

Here at Southern Welding, keeping our crew safe is job number one. That’s especially true during the hot summer months. With industrial facilities running year-round, the heat can put a serious strain on our crew. As the July sun beats down, let’s review some essential safety tips to keep you cool, hydrated, and focused throughout your workday on the job site.

Hydration is Key:

Hydrate Before You Start: Start your day with at least 20 ounces of water. Texas heat means sweating more, so plan to replenish fluids constantly throughout the shift. Aim for a cup (8 ounces) of water every 15–20 minutes.

Skip the Sugar: Sugary drinks, excessive coffee, and even too much tea can actually dehydrate you further. Opt for water, or consider sports drinks with electrolytes to replace lost salts and minerals.

Carry an Insulated Bottle: Invest in a reusable, insulated water bottle with a wide mouth (easier to refill and clean). This keeps your drink refreshingly cold throughout the day.

Dress for Success (Against the Heat):

Flame-Retardant & Loose-Fitting: Safety first! Wear flame-retardant clothing made from lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton or fire-resistant blends. Loose-fitting clothes allow for better air circulation.

Sun Protection is Essential. A wide-brimmed hat or hardhat, preferably flame-retardant, and safety sunglasses are non-negotiable. Protect your head, neck, and eyes from the sun’s harsh rays.

Sunscreen, Every Day: Apply SPF 15 or higher sunscreen generously, reapplying every two hours, especially after sweating or getting wet. Don’t forget your ears, neck, and the tops of your feet!

Be Heat-Smart on the Job Site:

Buddy Up: Look out for each other! Keep an eye on your colleagues for signs of heat stress.

Cooling Strategies: Consider using a damp rag to cool your face and neck, or invest in a cooling vest for an extra layer of protection. When possible, set up a portable fan for airflow.

Specific Tips for Welders and Fabricators:

Hydrate During Welding: Keep a water bottle close by your project and take frequent sips, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Schedule Breaks Strategically: Take breaks when you’re not actively welding to minimize heat exposure. Try to schedule welding tasks during the cooler parts of the day if possible.

Wear Sweat-Wicking Base Layers: Consider wearing a sweat-wicking base layer under your flame-retardant clothing to help manage sweat.

Stay cool and hydrated!
